SAD Sarpanch's Husband Shot Dead in Tarn Taran Over Personal Dispute
Navdeep Singh, husband of an SAD sarpanch in Tarn Taran, was shot dead by a jeweller and two associates over a personal dispute. Police have registered a case and are conducting raids.
A personal dispute in Punjab's Tarn Taran district turned fatal when three men shot dead the husband of a Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) sarpanch, prompting police to launch raids to trace the accused.
The victim, Navdeep Singh, had been locked in a long-running dispute with a local jeweller, Surinder Singh, also known as Sonu Kanda. Preliminary investigations indicate the two men knew each other and had a heated argument on Sunday evening.
The confrontation escalated when Kanda, along with Nirmal Singh Nimma and Arshdeep Singh, allegedly opened fire on Navdeep Singh, leaving him critically injured. He was taken to a private hospital nearby, where doctors declared him dead.
Police reached the scene soon after receiving information and began an investigation. The area is being examined as part of the probe, and officers are working to establish the circumstances surrounding the attack. The crime scene was secured and a case was registered against the three suspects under Section 103 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and relevant provisions of the Arms Act.
DSP (City) Sukhbir Singh said raids are underway to arrest the accused, and ruled out any political rivalry or gangster angle behind the killing.
The incident has caused panic in the area, particularly because the victim was linked to a local political family.
Akali leader Bikram Singh Majithia reacted sharply, saying law and order in Punjab had "completely collapsed" and that even elected sarpanches were no longer safe. Lok Sabha MP and Akali leader Harsimrat Kaur Badal described the killing as a "cold-blooded murder" and demanded that the perpetrators be hunted down and brought to justice, while extending support to the victim's family.
