US Court Keeps Tate Brothers in Custody Pending UK Extradition
A US judge has denied bail for Andrew and Tristan Tate, who remain jailed while contesting extradition to the UK on rape and trafficking charges.
A federal judge in Miami has ordered that social media influencers Andrew and Tristan Tate remain in custody as they contest extradition to the United Kingdom, where they face accusations of rape and sex trafficking.
US Magistrate Lauren Louis denied a motion for release on Wednesday, ruling that the brothers had failed to demonstrate they do not pose a flight risk or a danger to the community. The judge also noted that no special circumstances justified their release, either individually or collectively.
The Tates, who were arrested on July 18 and have been held at the Federal Detention Center in Miami, are known for their online promotion of wealth and male dominance. Prosecutors argued they are a flight risk, pointing to their apparent financial resources and public boasts about holding multiple passports.
During a hearing last month, the brothers denied criminal accusations from multiple countries under oath. They described their provocative online personas as exaggerated characters rather than their true selves, and said they overstated their wealth to boost their social media influence.
Their legal team had sought release at least until an extradition hearing on the UK charges, arguing that Britain's request is premature because the brothers' criminal case in Romania is being processed first. Romanian authorities have allowed the Tates to remain free while those proceedings continue, and the brothers have complied with court-imposed restrictions and have not attempted to flee.
The extradition process could take several months, during which the Tates will remain in federal custody.
