Taylor Swift Becomes Most-Awarded Artist in MTV VMAs History

Taylor Swift has become the most-awarded artist in MTV Video Music Awards history, receiving the inaugural Artist Director Honors at the 2026 ceremony held Sunday at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles.

Swift had previously been tied with Beyoncé, with each holding 30 VMAs. The new honour recognises artists whose work behind the camera has expanded the possibilities of music video and advanced the art of visual storytelling.

The pop star also used the event to debut the music video for her new song, "Patient Zero." She directed the visual, which features Colin Farrell and Dakota Johnson. In the video, Johnson and Swift portray mirror images of each other.

"Patient Zero" is Swift's first single since she married Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce at Madison Square Garden in July.

The two-hour show was broadcast live on CBS. Other moments from the ceremony included Madonna accepting the Best Dance award, Sienna Spiro winning Best New Artist, and Taylor Swift taking Video of the Year for "The Fate of Ophelia."

The evening also featured performances by Sombr, Raye and Teddy Swims, who each performed George Michael songs, along with Adam Lambert performing "Freedom! '90" and Yung Lean performing "Moon Person."
