Teachers turn to AI for worksheets, videos and classroom innovation

Teachers across India are integrating AI into classrooms for worksheets, visual aids and professional development.

Artificial intelligence is steadily becoming a classroom companion, with teachers across education boards using generative tools to create worksheets, design visual aids and upgrade their own skills. The shift comes as both Union and State governments push for greater AI integration in school education.

Kavitha Ghosh, an English teacher at Delhi Public School, Bengaluru South, said AI has simplified several aspects of teaching. She uses the tools to generate differentiated worksheets for students at the end of each chapter, covering everything from critical analysis to reasoning and logic-based questions. These, she noted, help students prepare for board examinations where question papers have grown tougher over the years.

Ghosh also uses AI to create grammar exercises with deliberately embedded errors that are not easy for students to spot, and has built visual representations for poems such as Robert Frost's "Fire and Ice." She stressed that the quality of output depends heavily on the prompts given, making prompt engineering an essential skill for teachers today.

At the same time, she cautioned against unrestricted use of AI by students. Her approach involves assigning two projects — one completed in school where creativity and knowledge can be assessed directly, and another at home where AI use is permitted but with restrictions on copying text verbatim. Students are asked to rework submissions if they rely too heavily on AI-generated language.

Schools are also investing in structured upskilling programmes. Samran Wiriyaphong, K-12 Tech Coordinator at Canadian International School, said a year-long action research project titled "Assessment Redesign: Building Teacher Confidence in AI-Integrated Classrooms" is underway at the high school level. Teachers collaboratively redesign assessments with guardrails such as human-in-the-loop checks and visible process requirements.

In elementary classrooms, AI is used as a teacher-led demonstration tool to present multiple perspectives, followed by reflective discussions. Secondary students, meanwhile, use AI for independent exploration — comparing viewpoints in humanities or testing strategies in mathematics — while remaining accountable for verifying and preserving the originality of their work.

Government school teachers are also building their own AI-enabled resources. In Karwar's Chendiya taluk, Chandrakanth Gouda and Josphine G. Lima have developed 'Shikshakara Shaikshanika Sampanmulagalu', an open-source website hosting around 120 videos on topics from the Class 6, 7 and 8 syllabi across subjects like history, English, science and social science. AI tools helped create content on historical figures and the freedom movement. The idea emerged after a school trip a year ago, and the platform now serves both students and teachers as an advertisement-free alternative to social media video sites.
