Tejashwi Yadav Demands CM Samrat Choudhary's Resignation Over Jamui Incident

Leader of the Opposition Tejashwi Yadav on Tuesday demanded the resignation of Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary over the Jamui incident, in which a minor girl and boy were harassed. Mr. Yadav said the Chief Minister was unable to run the State, claiming that law and order had collapsed and the situation was alarming.

He alleged that Mr. Choudhary appeared preoccupied with lighting lamps and photo opportunities, while leaders in power were making absurd statements about such incidents.

Citing an old video of Mr. Choudhary dated September 29, 2025, when he was Deputy Chief Minister, Mr. Yadav noted that it had now gone viral. In the clip, Mr. Choudhary says that if anyone returning home from a village at midnight is touched, he will resign the next morning. Mr. Yadav said the Jamui incident had shamed Bihar and the nation, and that if the Chief Minister stood by his word, he should resign. He added that after becoming Chief Minister, Mr. Choudhary had repeatedly said people could travel safely through Bihar villages at night if they had no personal enemies.

The RJD national working president also criticised Janata Dal (United) State president Umesh Singh Kushwaha and Minister Shrawon Kumar, both of whom described the incident as a chitput ghatna (sporadic incident).

Mr. Yadav also took aim at Bihar Minister Shreyasi Singh, whose remarks have sparked a political debate. Ms. Singh, who represents the Jamui Assembly constituency, said on a national news channel that moral policing can be done more decently and elegantly. Congress Rajya Sabha member Pawan Khera criticised the Minister in a post on X, questioning whether intrusions become acceptable merely because they are carried out decently or elegantly, and arguing that the problem is the intrusion itself, not its manner.

Mr. Yadav said the way ruling party members were commenting on the Jamui incident and attempting to justify it was inappropriate. He added that Union Minister Rajiv Ranjan, alias Lalan Singh, was trying to cover up the matter by citing the previous government, while the Sports Minister was speaking of moral policing in this context. He asked whether they would speak this way if such an incident had occurred in their own families, and said such statements had brought further disgrace to Bihar.

Union Minister Jitan Ram Manjhi indirectly criticised the RJD leader, saying the accused arrested in the case were from the Yadav community. In a post on X, he said that since Mr. Yadav calls every Yadav in Bihar and Uttar Pradesh his brother, some of those brothers had teased a girl in Jamui and made a video to defame the government. Asked about Mr. Manjhi's indirect attack, Mr. Yadav called it meaningless.
