Telangana CM Agrees to 100 BC College Hostels, Orders Draft BC Protection Act

Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy has agreed to the sanction of 100 Backward Classes (BC) college hostels and asked the BC Welfare Department to prepare proposals for a BC Protection Act, following a meeting with community leaders in Hyderabad on Saturday.

A delegation of BC leaders, led by former MP and BC welfare activist R. Krishnaiah, called on the Chief Minister and placed a set of demands concerning the welfare and protection of the community. Among the key requests was the enactment of a BC Protection Act in Telangana, modelled on legislation already brought in by the Andhra Pradesh government.

The leaders also drew attention to the shortage of accommodation and educational infrastructure available to BC students. They sought the sanction of 100 BC college hostels and 120 BC residential schools, or Gurukuls, along with permanent buildings for these institutions.

According to the delegation, students are being put to hardship because of the absence of adequate and permanent infrastructure. The leaders further asked that vacant land acquired by the Hyderabad Disaster Response and Asset Protection Agency (HYDRAA) be identified for the construction of BC college hostel buildings.

The Chief Minister's response covers both the legislative and infrastructure demands raised at the meeting, with the BC Welfare Department now tasked with preparing the proposals for the proposed Act.
