Telangana CM Revanth Reddy moves to drop Konda Surekha from Cabinet

Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy has formally recommended to Governor Shiv Pratap Shukla that Minister Konda Surekha be removed from the state Council of Ministers with immediate effect. The recommendation was dispatched on Thursday, September 3, 2026, and the Governor is expected to act on it the same day.

The move follows a refusal by Ms. Surekha to step down voluntarily despite being informed of the Congress high command's decision. Sources indicate that disciplinary action had become likely after she met party president Mallikarjun Kharge on Wednesday. The Chief Minister's recommendation to the Governor marks the culmination of these developments.

The action comes amid a broader push by the Congress government to enforce stricter discipline within both the party and the administration.

In a related move, Mr. Reddy rescinded the appointment of G. Chinna Reddy as Vice-Chairman of the Telangana Planning Board with immediate effect.

Simultaneously, the government has moved to address concerns over representation, particularly after a Backward Class (BC) woman was dropped from the Cabinet. Gadwal Vijayalakshmi, a BC leader, has been appointed Vice-Chairperson of the Telangana Planning Board with Cabinet rank. Another BC leader, Nerella Sharada, has been named Chairperson of the Telangana State Commission for Women.

Further, former Rajya Sabha member G. Sudha Rani has been appointed Chairperson of the Kakatiya Urban Development Authority (KUDA). Ms. Sudha Rani hails from Warangal district, the same home district as Ms. Surekha. Within Congress circles, her appointment is seen as a signal that another BC woman leader from the district is being given prominence in the government's political and organisational framework.
