Telangana government hospitals face 2,238 vacant doctor posts
Telangana's Health department told the Legislative Council that 2,238 of 7,515 doctor posts in government teaching and secondary hospitals remain vacant.
Nearly one in three doctor posts across Telangana's government teaching and secondary hospitals is lying unfilled, with 2,238 of 7,515 sanctioned positions vacant, the Health department informed the Legislative Council on Thursday.
The figures came in reply to a question from MLC Naveen Kumar Kurumaiahgari. The State runs 203 government hospitals — 35 teaching hospitals, 16 speciality hospitals and 152 secondary hospitals — with 36,984 beds in its secondary and tertiary facilities.
The shortfall is most pronounced in the secondary healthcare system. Under the Directorate of Secondary Health hospitals, 4,092 posts are sanctioned but only 2,612 are filled, leaving 1,480 vacancies. Working strength there stands at 53% of the sanctioned total.
District-level data shows Hyderabad carrying the largest gap, with 148 vacant posts against 475 sanctioned. Nizamabad follows with 142 vacancies out of 253 sanctioned posts, and Khammam has 114 vacancies against 246 posts. Rangareddy and Vikarabad each report 98 vacant posts, Bhadradri Kothagudem 87 and Kamareddy 84.
At the other end, Karimnagar has only three vacancies, with 37 of its 40 sanctioned posts occupied. Rajanna Sircilla has four vacancies, Hanumakonda six, and Jayashankar Bhupalpally and Kumuram Bheem Asifabad eight each.
Government medical colleges and hospitals present a comparatively healthier picture. Of 3,423 required posts, 2,942 are available, leaving 758 vacancies — an available strength of 86%.
Among these institutions, GMC Mahbubnagar has the most vacancies at 75, followed by GMC Bhadradri Kothagudem with 63, GMC Asifabad with 62, GMC Mahabubabad with 57, GMC Wanaparthy with 51, GMC Siddipet with 46, GMC Jayashankar Bhupalpally with 45 and SIMS Ramagundam with 40.
Several institutions reported no vacancies, including Gandhi Medical College, Osmania Medical College, GMC Nalgonda, GMC Karimnagar, GMC Maheshwaram and GMC Yadadri. In a few cases, available personnel exceed the posts listed as required — Gandhi Medical College shows 204 available against 168 sanctioned, and Osmania Medical College 372 against 168.
