Telangana power utilities draw up summer action plan as demand hits record high
Telangana's power utilities have been directed to prepare a summer action plan after TGSPDCL logged its highest-ever peak load of 12,044 MW.
Power utilities in Telangana have been directed to draw up a comprehensive action plan to reinforce transmission and distribution networks ahead of an expected surge in electricity consumption in the coming months, with El Nino conditions cited as a factor.
The instructions were issued at a meeting on "Network Planning – Summer Action Plan" held in Hyderabad on Tuesday. Jitesh V. Patil, Chairman and Managing Director of TGSPDCL, told officials to take every step needed to meet the rising demand and additional load anticipated during summer.
The meeting came on a day when areas served by TGSPDCL recorded their highest-ever peak load of 12,044 megawatt at 3.52 pm. The previous high was 11,828 MW, clocked on September 11.
Within the GHMC limits, the maximum demand was registered on May 22 at 4,782 MW, along with the highest energy consumption for the area that day at 101.07 million units. At the state level, the highest-ever energy consumption was recorded on March 13 this year at 344.4 MU, while the highest peak load of 19,543 MW was logged on September 9.
Officials were asked to prepare network expansion plans that account not only for present requirements but also for projected demand over the next five to ten years. Mr. Patil called for expediting capacity augmentation at heavily loaded substations, feeders and power transformers.
Circle-wise proposals are to be readied for new EHT and UHV substations, 33/11 KV substations, additional power transformers, transformer capacity enhancement, new 33 KV feeders, switching stations and interlinking lines, in line with future needs.
The CMD also instructed officials to prepare power infrastructure plans for emerging industrial corridors such as Madharam–Ghatkesar, Thimmapur–Kandukur, Eliminedu–Ibrahimpatnam and Dandumalkapur–Choutuppal, and to coordinate closely with the Telangana Industrial Infrastructure Corporation (TGIIC) for timely execution.
He stressed the need to focus on dual-source power supply systems for data centres, IT parks, major industries and other critical consumers to ensure uninterrupted and quality power. Officials were told to identify heavily loaded 33 KV and 11 KV feeders and carry out network strengthening measures wherever required.
