Tesla's Cybercab Makes China Debut in Shanghai, Showcasing Driverless Design

Tesla's production Cybercab, a purpose-built autonomous vehicle, made its Chinese mainland debut in Shanghai on September 17, drawing public attention and debate over safety.

Tesla's production Cybercab, described as the world's first production vehicle designed specifically for autonomous driving, made its Chinese mainland debut in Shanghai on September 17. The vehicle appeared in the West Nanjing Road commercial area, where it will remain on display until September 21. The event does not involve sales or commercial robotaxi operations.

The Cybercab's design is notable for its extreme minimalism. It lacks side mirrors, rearview mirrors, a steering wheel, pedals, and rear seats. The cabin retains only two passenger seats and a 22-inch center display that handles all interaction functions. The vehicle's golden exterior is the natural color of the sheet metal, meaning it has no paint.

As a Level 4 autonomous electric vehicle intended for shared mobility, the Cybercab uses a high-definition camera vision system and sensors to achieve fully autonomous driving. Its energy consumption is approximately 10.2 kWh per 100 kilometers. A Tesla presenter at the event said the estimated travel cost is about $0.20 per mile, or roughly 0.84 yuan per kilometer, which the company says can significantly reduce travel costs.

Public reaction at the scene was mixed. One visitor expressed hesitation, saying, "I wouldn't ride in it myself. Sometimes it still needs supervision. You can't just let go." Others were seen taking pictures of the vehicle.

Zeng Zhiling, an automotive industry researcher, noted that China now has formal regulations permitting hands-off autonomous driving and a legal framework for commercial road operation. "From this perspective, I think we can look at how much of the technical path adopted in the United States is suitable for China," Zeng said.

The Cybercab entered commercial passenger service in Austin, United States, on September 3, with 45 units currently restricted to designated local areas. Domestic automakers have also introduced autonomous test vehicles without steering wheels. China's first mandatory national standard for L3 and L4 autonomous driving is set to take effect in July next year.
