Thailand School Shooting: Ministers Vow Safety Crackdown After Student Kills 5

Thai authorities are investigating a school shooting that left five staff members dead and several others wounded on Friday morning at Debsirin Nonthaburi School in Nonthaburi province, northwest of Bangkok.

The 14-year-old student gunman took his own life at the scene, according to Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, who visited the school shortly after the incident. He noted that the shooter was still carrying over 30 bullets when he died, suggesting the potential for greater harm had he not ended his own life.

Deputy Interior Minister Polapee Suwunchwee confirmed that the victims were school employees, including teachers and administrators. He also revealed that an inspection of the student's home uncovered computer gaming equipment, with teachers indicating the boy was an avid gamer. However, Polapee noted that the student had shown no signs of aggression when asked to stop playing and had generally obeyed his teachers.

Deputy Prime Minister and Higher Education Minister Yodchanan Wongsawat said the investigation into the student's mental health would be a multi-departmental effort involving the Department of Psychology and the Ministry of Public Health. He acknowledged that Thailand has dealt with similar incidents before.

Education Minister Prasert Jantararuangtong vowed that such an event would not be allowed to recur, emphasizing that schools must remain safe spaces. He announced plans for strict measures to control access to school premises and to prevent weapons from being brought onto campus.

The shooting occurred around 10 a.m. at the co-educational state school, which enrolls approximately 3,000 students aged 12 to 18. In the aftermath, grieving families and friends gathered outside the building, consoling each other as emergency workers and forensic teams processed the crime scene.

Thailand has one of the highest rates of gun ownership in Asia, second only to Pakistan in the region.
