Student gunman kills six in Thai high school attack near Bangkok

A student opened fire at a high school in Nonthaburi province, northwest of Bangkok, on Friday, killing at least six people and wounding more than 20 others, police said.

The attack took place at the Debsirin Nonthaburi School. Royal Thai Police spokesperson Trairong Piwpan confirmed the death toll, while Health Minister Pattana Promphat said 22 people were injured, nine of them critically. Some injuries were caused by falls as students scrambled for safety, and it was not immediately clear how many of the wounded had been shot.

Deputy Interior Minister Polapee Suwunchwee told reporters at the scene that five teachers were among the dead. He added that the shooter had killed his two grandparents at their home before travelling to the school. The gunman later died at a hospital.

A witness said students hid inside a classroom after hearing gunshots from another building, and were only led out when police arrived and cleared a path for them to evacuate.

Police said the motive for the attack was still under investigation. The weapon was believed to have been taken from a member of the student's family.

Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul offered his condolences and said he had instructed officials to ensure the victims received proper care. Emergency crews and forensic teams remained at the school for hours after the shooting, with grieving relatives and classmates gathering outside the campus.
