Eight dead as speeding car hits parked lorry on NH 66 in Thrissur
Eight people died when their car rammed a parked lorry on NH 66 in Thrissur early Friday. Victims were likely Tamil Nadu students.
A devastating road accident on National Highway 66 claimed eight lives in the early hours of Friday. The collision occurred at Panampikkunnu, near Kaipamangalam in Thrissur district, shortly after midnight.
The car, bearing a Madurai registration, was travelling from the Guruvayur side towards Kodungallur when it crashed into a lorry parked on the highway. The lorry was reportedly stationary on a stretch where road construction work was underway.
Seven occupants died at the scene. An eighth person, critically injured, was rushed to a hospital but succumbed to injuries later. All eight victims were in the car.
Preliminary evidence suggests the deceased were students from Tamil Nadu. An identity card belonging to a student of PSNA Engineering College in Dindigul was recovered from the crash site, leading authorities to suspect the group were engineering students.
The impact left the car mangled, prompting a joint rescue effort by local residents, Fire and Rescue Services personnel, and police. Firefighters had to cut through the wreckage to extricate two of the trapped occupants.
An investigation into the accident has been initiated.
