Thrissur gears up for Onam with colourful Pulikali procession
Nine teams of painted 'tigers' will perform at Swaraj Round for Onam, featuring Pulivandi floats and themed tableaux.
Thrissur is set to burst into colour this Saturday as more than 400 performers, painted as tigers, take over Swaraj Round for the Onam festivities. The annual Pulikali event will see nine teams participate, each bringing its own energy and artistry to the traditional folk art form.
Every team will present a 'Pulivandi' — a float or vehicle decorated to accompany the tiger dancers — along with a tableau that blends mythological narratives with contemporary themes. The combination is expected to offer spectators a visual treat that honours tradition while reflecting current sensibilities.
Pulikali, which literally translates to 'tiger play', is a centuries-old ritual performed during Onam in central Kerala. Artists paint their bodies in vivid stripes and hues to mimic the big cat, then dance to the rhythm of percussion instruments. The event at Swaraj Round is among the most anticipated cultural highlights of the season, drawing large crowds from across the district.
With nine teams fielding elaborate floats and themed presentations, this year's edition promises a lively and immersive experience for all who gather at the historic ground.
