
China's Tianwen-3 Mars Sample-Return Mission Enters Prototype Phase
China's Tianwen-3 Mars sample-return mission is on track, with probe hardware in prototype development and scientific teams preparing for a 2028 launch.
China's first Mars sample-return mission, Tianwen-3, has moved into its prototype development phase, according to the mission's chief scientist. Speaking on the sidelines of the International Deep Space Exploration Conference 2026 in Hefei, Hou Zengqian, an academician with the Chinese Academy of Sciences, said the mission is progressing smoothly with intensified efforts to overcome technical challenges.
Hou noted that while probe equipment is now in prototype development, scientific preparations are running in parallel. Multiple scientist teams from across the country are collaborating to address challenges aligned with the mission's scientific objectives.
The mission is part of China's broader planetary exploration program and is planned for launch around 2028, with the aim of bringing Martian samples back to Earth by approximately 2031. If successful, Tianwen-3 would become the first mission to return samples from the Red Planet.
Such samples could drive research across disciplines including astrobiology and planetary geology, while expanding human understanding of Mars and supporting the search for extraterrestrial life.
