Tibet Floods: Three Dead, 265 Missing Near Nepal Border
Flash floods in Tibet's Gyirong County have killed three and left 265 missing near the Nepal border, with rescue operations ongoing.
At least three people have died and 265 remain missing in Gyirong County, Tibet, after massive flash floods struck the region near the China-Nepal border on Wednesday. The disaster has also claimed at least 160 lives on the Nepalese side, where hundreds of tourists and workers are still unaccounted for.
Drone footage released by Chinese state broadcaster CCTV shows a flooded valley and the aftermath of the deluge, with roads destroyed and buildings buried under thick, cement-colored mudflows. The footage also captures the scale of the destruction along the key travel corridor leading to the border town of Gyirong.
The region's steep valleys serve as vital economic lifelines and travel routes, but they are highly vulnerable to such sudden natural calamities. The main road to the border area has been destroyed, severely complicating rescue operations for the teams deployed to the affected zones.
State news agency Xinhua has reported significant casualties, though the full extent of the damage is still being assessed as authorities work to reach isolated communities.
