NYPD Officers Shoot Woman Wielding Knives in Times Square
Police shot a woman brandishing two large knives in Times Square on Monday, near the NYPD substation.
New York police shot a woman in Times Square on Monday after she advanced on officers while brandishing two large knives, according to bystander video shared on social media.
The incident unfolded directly outside One Times Square, adjacent to an NYPD substation, in one of the most heavily patrolled and visited locations in the city. The area was immediately cordoned off, with police closing a section of 7th Avenue and advising the public to steer clear.
Video footage shows a group of at least ten officers surrounding the woman, who is holding two large kitchen knives. In the footage, an officer appears to deploy a Taser, but it does not stop her. The woman is then seen walking quickly toward the officers, waving the knives in front of her.
As one officer stepped back, he and at least two others drew their handguns, and gunshots can be heard on the video. The woman's condition has not been released by authorities, who were preparing to hold a news briefing. It is not immediately clear whether she injured anyone before the shooting.
