Avani Pournami: Tiruchendur Shoreline Retreats 100 Feet, Exposing Rocky Seabed
The sea at Tiruchendur receded nearly 100 feet during Avani Pournami, exposing algae-covered rocks and marine life, drawing crowds to the beach.
The coastline at Tiruchendur in Thoothukudi district witnessed an unusual sight on the occasion of the Avani month full moon, as the sea receded by nearly 100 feet. The retreating waters exposed large stretches of the seabed, including rocks covered in green algae that are normally submerged.
The phenomenon drew large numbers of devotees and tourists to the beach, who gathered to observe the exposed marine area. The sight of the algae-covered rocks bathed in full moonlight created a scenic tableau that captivated onlookers.
Tiruchendur is home to the Subramania Swamy Temple, the second of the six sacred abodes (Arupadai Veedu) of Lord Murugan. Thousands of pilgrims visit daily, many of whom traditionally take a holy dip in the sea before performing a ritual bath at the sacred Nazhi Kinaru (stepwell) and then offering prayers at the temple.
On this day, the sea receded along the stretch from opposite the Nazhi Kinaru to the Santhosha Mandapam. As the water pulled back, visitors spotted small conches, shells, and tiny fish and crabs trapped in pools between the rock crevices. Children were seen eagerly watching and catching the small creatures.
Officials and locals note that such changes in sea levels—whether receding or turning rough—are a natural occurrence along this coastline on full moon and new moon days. As night fell, the exposed rocks and pooled water under the moonlight provided a picturesque setting, with devotees and tourists sitting on the rocks, taking photographs, and enjoying the natural beauty.
