The Tirupati district police have introduced a geo-tagging programme to help trace missing children and elderly persons during the Brahmotsavams. The initiative, titled 'Wear a tag - your safety is our responsibility', is designed for high-footfall areas that are under continuous surveillance.
Under the programme, tags carrying location information will be provided to vulnerable individuals. If a person goes missing, the tag is expected to assist the police in locating them quickly.
The areas covered by the initiative are monitored round the clock through CCTV cameras, drones and a command-and-control system. These measures are intended to strengthen the safety net for pilgrims and visitors during the festival period.
The police have described the tag as a safety measure, with the responsibility for protection resting with the department. The initiative focuses on children and the elderly, who are at greater risk of getting separated in large crowds.
By combining geo-tagging with existing surveillance infrastructure, the district police aim to reduce the time taken to trace missing persons and reunite them with their families.
