TMC Accuses BJP of Assaulting Leaders in Kolkata's Mukundapur

The Mamata Trinamool Congress (TMC) has accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of attacking its leaders and workers in Kolkata's Mukundapur on Tuesday night, alleging that women workers were manhandled during the incident.

The party said former MLA and IPS officer Humayun Kabir was among those injured. Sharing photographs on social media, TMC claimed Mr. Kabir was seen bloodied and wounded. The party also alleged that its IT cell head, Upasana Chowdhury, was assaulted and molested, and that her clothes were torn. Her car was vandalised and her home came under attack, the party added.

Describing the events, TMC said a scuffle broke out between workers of the two parties over the alleged capturing of a party office, with slogans and counter-slogans raised and eggs thrown. A delegation of TMC leaders was on its way to East Jadavpur Police Station to file a deputation when they were attacked, the party said.

Senior TMC leaders, including general secretary Abhishek Banerjee and MPs Sagarika Ghose, Dola Sen and Derek O'Brien, as well as former MLA Samirul Islam, condemned the incident and questioned the absence of police action. Mr. Banerjee said political differences cannot become a licence for political violence, and called for no impunity, selective silence or political shielding for those responsible.

BJP MLA from Jadavpur, Sarbari Mukherjee, defended the actions of her party's supporters, telling a local media organisation that common people were now retaliating against those protecting miscreants.

The West Bengal Congress also condemned the incident, stating it viewed the attack not as one on any single party but as a manifestation of an attempt to establish one-party rule in the state, and expressed opposition to the suppression of opposition voices.

No official statement has been issued by the police on the matter.
