Two TMC Leaders Arrested in Bengal Over 2020 Attack on Nadda's Convoy
Two TMC leaders were arrested in South 24 Parganas for their alleged role in the 2020 attack on J.P. Nadda's convoy at Shirakol.
Two local Trinamool Congress leaders have been arrested in West Bengal's South 24 Parganas district in connection with the attack on the convoy of then BJP national president J.P. Nadda, a senior police officer said on Monday.
The accused, identified as Ripon Sheikh and Sanjib Mondal, were taken into custody by personnel of the Usthi Police Station on Sunday. Firearms were recovered from them at the time of the arrest, the officer added.
According to the police, investigations have indicated that the two men were allegedly involved in the assault on Mr. Nadda's convoy at Shirakol in South 24 Parganas on December 10, 2020. The officer described them as influential TMC figures in the Magrahat Paschim area who have also faced allegations of links to anti-social activities.
The two are currently in police custody and are being questioned to determine the exact role they are alleged to have played in the 2020 incident. Investigators are separately trying to trace where the seized firearms came from, the officer said.
Mr. Nadda was on his way to Diamond Harbour for a BJP programme when his convoy was attacked near Shirakol. Several vehicles in the convoy were damaged and some of those travelling with the BJP leader sustained injuries.
The episode had triggered a major political row in the state at the time, with the BJP and the then ruling TMC trading charges over responsibility for the attack.
