TMC MLA Kunal Ghosh alleges second attack on car in two days

TMC MLA Kunal Ghosh, a member of the Mamata Banerjee camp, alleged on Sunday that his car came under attack in east Kolkata while he was travelling to a programme in his Beliaghata constituency.

Mr. Ghosh said motorcycle-borne men smashed the windshield of his vehicle with hammers in the Narkeldanga area, and that one of them pointed a gun at his security personnel. He showed reporters shards of the broken glass and said he had filed a complaint at a police station.

The alleged incident came a day after stones and eggs were thrown at his car in Hooghly district's Uttarpara, where he was headed to attend a meeting of Ms. Banerjee. "Yesterday there was an attack on me at Uttarpara. Today, they wanted to kill me," Mr. Ghosh told reporters.

After the Uttarpara incident, the legislator took his vehicle to the West Bengal Police headquarters at Bhabani Bhavan in Kolkata, but was not allowed to enter, following which he lodged a complaint at a police station.

Mr. Ghosh alleged that a "jungle raj" prevails in West Bengal under BJP rule, claiming that an elected MLA was being attacked by ruling-party goons while the police looked the other way.

The BJP rejected the allegations. Uttarpara MLA Dipanjan Chakraborty had said on Saturday that Mr. Ghosh was staging drama, while party spokesperson Debajit Sarkar said the legislator was engineering the attacks on his own vehicle by instigating TMC workers to gain publicity, and that no one from the BJP was involved.
