TMC MP Sagarika Ghose accuses Bengal BJP government of police misuse

Trinamool Congress (TMC) Rajya Sabha MP Sagarika Ghose on Wednesday accused the BJP-led government in West Bengal of misusing the police and law-and-order machinery to target Opposition leaders, terming it an assault on democracy, constitutional values, and human rights.

Speaking at a press conference in Delhi, Ghose alleged that FIRs were being registered against TMC leaders and workers without due process, and that old cases were being revived to harass them. She claimed FIRs were not being uploaded and notices were not being given to the accused, indicating a deliberate misuse of the system.

Ghose described the actions as a "pure case of political vendetta" and said the party would challenge them at every available forum. She said the issue would be raised across the country and on international platforms, calling the situation a violation of human rights.

Referring to a sustained campaign against the party leadership, Ghose noted that TMC national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee was questioned for six hours by investigators on Tuesday, while Rajya Sabha leader Derek O'Brien was summoned for questioning on Wednesday. She alleged that O'Brien was pushed during a scuffle in Kolkata after corporation personnel dismantled a billboard from a TMC office, and that an FIR was now registered against him.

Ghose also cited a series of cases against TMC leaders and the freezing of party accounts as part of a broader crackdown. Her remarks come amid controversy over the removal of a billboard from a party office on Camac Street, where TMC claims police forced their way into the premises, leading to a scuffle.
