Tamil Nadu SC/ST Commission Seeks Report on Alleged Humiliation of Adi Dravida Students
Tamil Nadu's SC/ST Commission has taken suo motu cognisance of an alleged incident in Cuddalore where Adi Dravida students were forced to carry footwear on their heads.
The Tamil Nadu State Commission for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes has taken suo motu cognisance of an alleged incident in Cuddalore in which Adi Dravida students were reportedly forced to carry footwear on their heads.
Notices have been issued to the Cuddalore Collector and the Superintendent of Police, directing them to submit an action-taken report to the Commission by September 25.
The notices were issued by Imayam, Chairman-in-charge of the Commission, along with members S. Selvakumar, S. Anandaraja and P. Ilanchezhian.
The Commission's intervention followed a complaint to the government from Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) leader Thol. Thirumavalavan.
According to the Commission, the sequence of events began on September 14, when Adi Dravidas from Karikuppam in Cuddalore took out a procession carrying a Vinayaka idol. Members of another community allegedly objected to the idol being taken along a common route and forced the procession to use a private road instead. A complaint was filed in connection with the matter.
The following day, members of the other community allegedly forced Adi Dravida students to carry their footwear on their heads. When the students refused, they were abused, the Commission said.
The incident came to the attention of Mr. Thirumavalavan, who wrote to the government, prompting the Commission to take up the matter on its own.
