TNPCB issues eco-friendly guidelines for Vinayagar Chathurthi celebrations

Ahead of Vinayagar Chathurthi, the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB) has issued a set of guidelines urging the public to observe the festival in an environmentally responsible manner. The advisory emphasises the use of idols crafted exclusively from natural, biodegradable materials such as traditional clay and mud.

Strict restrictions have been placed on idols made of Plaster of Paris (PoP), plastic, and thermocol, which are not permitted for immersion in water bodies. The board has also cautioned against the use of toxic chemical dyes and oil paints, recommending instead eco-friendly, water-based, and non-toxic natural colours. For decoration, the use of dried flowers, straw, and other natural materials is encouraged.

The guidelines further discourage the use of single-use plastic and thermocol in idols, pandals, and pooja materials. Organisers have been advised to serve prasadam in biodegradable or reusable plates and glasses, and to ensure proper segregation and disposal of waste. For idol beautification, washable and removable decorative clothes made from natural fibres and dyes are preferred over disposable items coated with paints and chemicals.

Immersion of idols must be carried out only at locations notified by the respective district administrations, in line with the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) guidelines, which are available on the TNPCB website. The board has also recommended the use of LED lighting over filament bulbs and has urged the public to minimise single-use decorative items, storing and reusing decorations wherever possible.
