Former Kerala DGP Tomin Thachankary convicted in disproportionate assets case
A Kottayam Vigilance Court convicted former Kerala DGP Tomin J. Thachankary in a disproportionate assets case, with sentencing set for later today.
A Vigilance Court in Kottayam on Thursday found former Director General of Police Tomin J. Thachankary guilty in a disproportionate assets case. The court is set to announce the quantum of punishment at 2 p.m.
Before the sentencing, the court invited Mr. Thachankary to speak. He told the court that he had suffered chest pain two days earlier and was not in good health.
The case dates back to 2007, when the Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Bureau registered it, alleging that Mr. Thachankary had accumulated assets beyond his known sources of income during his service between 2003 and 2007. He retired as DGP in 2023.
Investigators found that his assets exceeded his known income by about 135%. The prosecution argued that he could not satisfactorily explain the source of the additional assets, while the Vigilance traced documents related to the expenditure incurred.
The chargesheet was filed in 2013. At the time, Mr. Thachankary was serving as Additional Director General of Police, and several alleged irregularities had also come to light against him.
