Tripura Couple Found Dead in Agartala Home; Probe Underway

A couple in Agartala was found dead in their home. Police are investigating the cause, with post-mortem reports awaited.

The decomposed bodies of a couple, believed to have been in a live-in relationship, were discovered in their residence in Agartala on Tuesday. The deceased have been identified as Suman Debbarma, 40, and Priya Debbarma, 39.

The grim discovery was made after neighbours and relatives noticed a strong, foul odour emanating from the house. Suman's sister, growing concerned, entered the room and found one body hanging and the other lying on the floor. She immediately alerted the authorities.

Ripesh Debnath, Suman's brother-in-law who resides upstairs in the same building, stated that the couple had been living together for approximately three years. He confirmed that the bodies were found after the smell prompted the family to investigate.

A police team, accompanied by a forensic science unit, arrived at the scene to collect evidence and samples. The bodies have been sent for post-mortem examination. Preliminary assessments suggest the couple may have died around two days prior to their discovery, though the exact time and cause of death are yet to be confirmed.

Family members have indicated that the couple frequently argued. They also claimed that Priya had been married previously and that the family had objected to her relationship with Suman. Relatives had advised the pair to either formalise their relationship after resolving Priya's prior marriage legally or to live separately.

Assistant Sub-Inspector Dilip Debbarma, who was part of the team at the scene, said it cannot yet be confirmed whether the deaths were suicides or involved other circumstances. The findings of the post-mortem examination and the ongoing investigation are expected to shed light on the matter.
