Tropical Storm Dolphin Brings Flooding to Eastern China After Typhoon Landfall

Tropical Storm Dolphin has brought heavy rainfall and localized flooding to eastern China, days after it struck the coast as a powerful typhoon. The storm made landfall on Sunday evening near Taizhou in Zhejiang province, packing winds of 151 kilometers per hour (93 mph).

By Monday morning, the system had weakened significantly, with maximum sustained winds dropping to 65 kilometers per hour (40 mph), according to Taiwan's Central Weather Administration. The China Meteorological Administration reported that Dolphin was moving northwest at 15 to 20 kilometers per hour (9 to 12 mph) and was expected to continue losing strength until it dissipates.

Authorities have warned of the continued risk of severe flooding and landslides in affected areas. State broadcaster CCTV reported that rescue teams in Yueqing, a city in Zhejiang, were searching for people trapped in flooded homes and clearing debris from streets.

In preparation for the storm's arrival, more than 300,000 people were relocated in advance, and Shanghai's two airports canceled over 1,300 flights. The storm also intensified seasonal monsoon rains in the Philippines, triggering floods and landslides there.

Elsewhere in the region, Tropical Storm Chan-hom was moving toward Japan's Pacific coast. The Japan Meteorological Agency said the storm had winds of 83 kilometers per hour (51 mph) on Monday morning and was expected to strengthen slightly before making landfall Tuesday into Wednesday.
