US Mint Releases $1 Coin Featuring Trump for America's 250th Anniversary

The US Mint begins selling a $1 coin bearing President Trump's face, minted for America's 250th anniversary, despite laws against living presidents on currency.

The United States Mint will begin selling a $1 coin on Wednesday that bears the likeness of President Donald Trump, marking the nation's 250th anniversary. The gold-finished coin features Trump's portrait on one side and the Great Seal of the United States on the other.

The design received approval this year from the U.S. Commission of Fine Arts, whose members were appointed by Trump. The president has previously described the idea of his face on a coin as "very unusual" but said he felt "honored by it."

The coin's release follows a broader pattern of Trump seeking to leave his mark on national institutions during his second term, including efforts involving the Kennedy Center and the U.S. Institute of Peace, some of which have faced legal challenges.

While federal law generally prohibits depicting a living president on U.S. currency, the treasury secretary holds authority in certain circumstances to authorize special coin minting. The Mint states the coins were struck to "honor 250 years of great American heritage."

The obverse side reads "LIBERTY" above Trump's image and "1776~2026" below. The reverse displays the Great Seal, featuring a bald eagle holding arrows and an olive branch, with the motto "E PLURIBUS UNUM" in its beak.

A roll of 25 coins is priced at $61, while a bag of 100 costs $154.50. The Mint has randomly inserted special-issue coins marked "July 4th" among the rolls and bags, commemorating the date they were struck. Households may place up to two orders initially, with the limit lifting at 2 p.m. Eastern on Thursday.
