Trump Touts $5,000 Adult Dividend, Ties It to Republican Midterm Win
Trump says the US can afford a $5,000 dividend for adults if Republicans keep Congress, adding he always keeps his pledges.
US President Donald Trump said on Friday that the United States could comfortably fund a $5,000 "dividend" for every adult if his Republican Party retains control of Congress in the upcoming midterm elections.
Speaking to reporters in Doonbeg, Ireland, Trump was asked whether congressional approval would be required for the proposed payout. He replied that the plan would be "easy" to execute if Republicans win, pointing to what he described as strong revenue inflows.
"$5,000 to all adults in the country and we can easily handle that because we're taking in so much money," he said.
The president also drew a contrast with the opposition, arguing that Democrats could not make a similar commitment without causing severe economic disruption. He claimed such a pledge from the other side would lead to an immediate downturn and a depression.
Trump reiterated that he had made the promise and intended to honour it, stating, "I made that pledge, I always keep my pledge."
The remarks come as the midterm elections approach, with control of both chambers of Congress at stake. The proposal, if pursued, would represent a significant direct transfer to American adults, though its path through a divided or Republican-led legislature remains unclear.
