President Donald Trump dismissed calls for AI regulation, saying he alone serves as the technology's guardrail and calling restrictions a 'sick conspiracy'.
US President Donald Trump on Monday rejected the push for new restrictions on artificial intelligence, arguing that he personally serves as the only safeguard the technology requires.
In a post on social media, Trump said the sole control or "guardrails" AI needs is a strong and intelligent president, adding that the United States has that in ample measure. He described efforts to limit the technology as a "sick conspiracy."
The president also said his administration had already prevented the AI company Anthropic from doing things that were bad or potentially bad.
His remarks came in response to appeals from technology leaders at Anthropic, OpenAI, Microsoft and other firms, who have sought stronger regulation of AI. Those companies have argued that oversight is needed to ensure the technology is developed safely, to settle questions of legal liability and to protect national security.
Trump's position places him at odds with the industry voices calling for clearer rules, even as he claims credit for intervening in the sector. The comments underscore the continuing divide over how far governments should go in supervising the fast-moving field of artificial intelligence.
