Trump Bars CNN, MSNOW and Politico from White House Press Access

President Donald Trump said he is banning CNN, MSNOW and Politico from the White House, the latest move testing First Amendment press protections.

President Donald Trump announced on Friday that CNN, MSNOW and Politico would be barred from the White House, citing what he described as unfavorable coverage of his administration.

In a post on his social media platform, Trump said the ban would take effect immediately, writing that the three outlets were being excluded "as a result of their constant 'reporting' FAKE NEWS!" He also suggested that additional media organizations could face similar restrictions.

The move marks the latest flashpoint over press access to the executive branch and raises fresh questions about the limits of First Amendment protections governing the relationship between the White House and the news media.

It follows an earlier decision by the administration in February 2025 to keep Varta Wire journalists out of the Oval Office, Air Force One and other events where space is limited, a step taken after the outlet declined to adopt the president's preferred name for the Gulf of Mexico. That outlet filed a lawsuit challenging the restriction, and the case remains ongoing.

Trump has repeatedly clashed with news organizations whose coverage he considers hostile, filing lawsuits against several outlets and publicly criticizing individual reporters both in person and online. Since returning to office, he has pursued legal action against The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, the BBC and other news organizations.
