Trump Says Justice Department Will Keep Close Watch on AI Sector
Trump told world leaders the US Justice Department would monitor AI closely, opposing new rules and dismissing safety alarms as a hoax.
US President Donald Trump said on Tuesday that American law enforcement would keep the artificial intelligence sector under scrutiny, while reiterating his opposition to fresh regulations on the technology.
Addressing global leaders at the United Nations General Assembly, Trump said the Department of Justice would monitor AI developments. "We're going to watch it closely through the Department of Justice," he said, referring to the technology and the top US law enforcement agency.
His remarks come amid mounting public concern about the risks posed by artificial intelligence. The debate drew fresh attention after Anthropic researcher Jacob Coxon resigned, warning that people building AI earnestly believe it could kill us all by the end of the decade.
Trump has in recent weeks brushed aside such warnings, describing them as a hoax. On Tuesday he argued against curbing the sector's expansion. "I'm not going to stifle growth of something that will be bigger than the Industrial Revolution," he said.
The president also said US government documents would adopt the term "super intelligence" in place of artificial intelligence going forward.
