Trump dispatches Witkoff, Kushner to Moscow and Kyiv with peace plan
Trump says Witkoff and Kushner will travel to Moscow and Kyiv with a proposal to end the Russia-Ukraine war.
President Donald Trump announced on Friday that senior US envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner will travel this weekend to Moscow and Kyiv, carrying what he described as a proposal to end the Russia-Ukraine war. Speaking to reporters in the Oval Office, Trump said the two envoys were being sent "to see whether or not we can get something done," adding that there "may be a good chance that we'll do it."
The trip is scheduled to begin in Moscow before moving on to Kyiv, with talks expected to stretch into early next week. The announcement comes amid an escalation in the air war between the two countries; earlier on Friday, a Russian drone struck the headquarters of Ukraine's security service in central Kyiv.
Trump also used the briefing to preview Chinese President Xi Jinping's upcoming visit to Washington later this month, confirming that a state dinner would be hosted in his honour. The president praised his relationship with Xi, calling him "a great gentleman" and noting their countries share a "very good trading relationship" despite being competitors. Trump added that the new White House helipad, currently under construction on the lawn, would be completed in time for Xi's arrival.
