Trump's Grass Obsession: A President's Fixation With Lawns

President Donald Trump has a well-documented fondness for many topics, but few have received as much of his attention as grass. Since returning to the White House, he has spoken about lawns at dozens of events, sometimes dedicating more time to the subject than to major policy issues like the economy or the war in Iran.

His comments have ranged from brief asides to lengthy monologues. In one interview, he pointed out the Oval Office window to discuss plans for the lawn. At a recent event with military spouses, he mused, "Grass is like humans. It has a life."

According to a tally of public appearances, Trump has mentioned grass at least 45 times over the past 18 months—roughly once every 12 days. This frequency far exceeds the 26 mentions during his entire first term. The topic has surfaced at events as varied as a Diwali celebration, a Thanksgiving turkey pardon, and the signing of an executive order on TikTok.

Trump attributes his knowledge to his business background. "I know a lot about grass because I own a lot of golf courses," he said in August. "If you don't have good grass, you're not in business very long." He has also declared himself the world's foremost expert on the subject.

His interest has practical applications. The White House South Lawn has undergone significant changes, including the installation of a helicopter landing pad and the aftermath of a UFC event held for his 80th birthday. Crews have been working to restore the turf, with plans to plant a custom blend of fescues and bluegrasses selected by Trump in consultation with a lawn expert from Scotts Miracle-Gro.

Trump's vision extends beyond the White House. He has pledged to beautify Washington's parks, promising they will eventually rival the manicured aesthetics of Augusta National Golf Club—or, as he puts it, his own Trump National Golf Club in Virginia, which he considers even better.
