Trump announces 90-day ground beef import expansion to lower US prices

US President Donald Trump says he will allow 300,000 metric tons of ground beef imports over 90 days, claiming prices will drop 25%.

US President Donald Trump announced on Friday a temporary 90-day measure to expand ground beef imports, a move he says is aimed at easing pressure on American consumers facing high grocery costs.

Under the plan, up to 300,000 metric tons of ground beef would be permitted into the country without affecting existing tariff-rate quotas. Trump said in a social media post that he has received a commitment that the imported meat would be sold at 25% below current market prices.

The president did not specify which countries would supply the beef or identify who had agreed to the reduced pricing. He framed the decision as a dual-purpose measure, saying it would lower costs for shoppers while allowing the domestic cattle industry room to expand.

"This deal will reduce prices for Americans while giving space for our Great American Beef Herd to grow again," Trump wrote.

The White House did not immediately respond to requests for additional details about the agreement, including how the price commitment would be enforced or when the imports would begin arriving.
