Trump Sidesteps Hegseth 2028 Talk, Praises Pentagon Focus

President Donald Trump on Monday brushed aside reports that Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth is considering a 2028 presidential run, insisting the Pentagon chief's attention remains on the armed forces.
Asked in the Oval Office whether he could support Hegseth in a future bid, Trump said, "I think he's doing a fantastic job but it's very early to talk about that." He added that many potential candidates remain unknown to the public, while reiterating that Hegseth is "done a great job" and cares deeply about the military.
Hegseth has previously dismissed the speculation, posting on X that the suggestion was "100% false."
Trump also addressed monetary policy, responding to Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh's recent signal about possibly raising interest rates. The president expressed respect for Warsh but maintained that current rates are "too high," arguing the United States should enjoy the lowest borrowing costs globally given its economic standing.
On the diplomatic front, Trump was asked about Russia's finance minister attending the G20 summit in North Carolina. He said the administration favors engagement, stating, "We like getting along with everybody," and credited his success to maintaining broad relationships.
The comments come as Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent meets global finance leaders amid ongoing US tariff disputes and the military campaign in Iran, which has kept fuel prices elevated.
