Trump Says Son Will Repay Russian Oligarch for Wedding Costs
President Trump says his son Donald Trump Jr. will repay Umar Kremlev, the Russian oligarch reported to have funded his wedding festivities in the Bahamas.
President Donald Trump said on Friday that his son, Donald Trump Jr., has told him he intends to repay a Russian oligarch who reportedly covered the cost of his wedding celebrations earlier this year.
Speaking to reporters, Trump recounted asking his son about the matter after the reports emerged. According to the president, his son replied that he was paying the money back, adding that the conversation had taken place some time ago. "I heard he's paying," Trump said.
When the reports first surfaced, Trump had said he was not familiar with the businessman in question.
The payments are reported to have been made by Umar Kremlev, a wealthy businessman who heads the International Boxing Association. Reports indicate that Kremlev spent hundreds of thousands of dollars on wedding festivities held in the Bahamas in May.
This week, Democrats in the U.S. Congress opened an investigation into the reports surrounding the funding of the celebrations.
A representative for Donald Trump Jr. did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
