President Donald Trump is scheduled to meet New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani in New York on Monday, as the president travels to the city for the United Nations General Assembly.
The meeting will take place at Gracie Mansion, the official residence of the mayor, according to Anna Bahr, Mamdani's communications director. Bahr said the two would discuss issues affecting the city and its residents. The White House confirmed that the meeting will go ahead but did not provide further details.
Mamdani, a democratic socialist, defeated former Governor Andrew Cuomo in the Democratic primary and went on to win the general election in November. He has frequently been a target of Republican criticism.
Despite that, Trump has often struck a warm tone toward the young mayor. Their first meeting after Mamdani's election was cordial, with Trump saying at the White House that the then-mayor-elect would "surprise some conservative people." During the 2025 campaign, the president had called Mamdani a "100% Communist Lunatic."
At a meeting in February, Mamdani presented Trump with a mock New York Daily News front page reading "Trump to City: Let's Build." The gesture echoed the famous 1975 headline "FORD TO CITY: DROP DEAD," which referred to President Gerald Ford's promise to veto financial assistance for the city. Mamdani's aides said at the time that the gift was intended to show Trump the reaction and support that new federal investments in housing could generate in the city.
