Trump Taps White House Aide Dr. Heidi Overton to Lead FDA

President Trump announced Dr. Heidi Overton as his pick for FDA commissioner, citing her work on health initiatives and alignment with MAHA goals.

President Donald Trump has selected Dr. Heidi Overton, a deputy director of the White House Domestic Policy Council, to serve as the next commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The announcement was made Wednesday via a post on Truth Social, where Trump described Overton as a "rockstar" who would prioritize faster cures, innovation, and lower drug prices.

Overton, a medical doctor with training from the University of New Mexico and a doctorate in clinical investigation from Johns Hopkins University, has been a key figure in several of the administration's second-term health initiatives. Before joining the White House, she served as chief policy officer at the America First Policy Institute, a conservative think tank.

Her nomination comes at a time of significant transition for the FDA. The previous commissioner, Dr. Marty Makary, resigned in May, leaving several projects unfinished, including work on ultraprocessed foods, antidepressants, and COVID-19 vaccines. The agency has also faced criticism from industry executives, anti-abortion activists, and public health experts over various policy decisions.

If confirmed by the narrowly Republican-led Senate, Overton will face a complex set of priorities. These include balancing the anti-regulatory interests of traditional Republicans with the anti-corporate stance of Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. She will also need to address ongoing reviews of antidepressants, peptide regulation, and a proposed definition for ultraprocessed foods.

Overton has been a vocal critic of abortion pills and has appeared alongside the president at events promoting controversial health policies, including a recent executive order on childhood vaccines. Her confirmation hearing before the Senate health committee, chaired by Sen. Bill Cassidy, is expected to include questions on these and other matters.

The FDA is also currently managing investigations into two foodborne illness outbreaks linked to tainted lettuce and jalapeño peppers, adding to the list of challenges awaiting the next commissioner.
