Trump Says US Reviewing Position on Falkland Islands Sovereignty

US President Donald Trump has said that Washington is reviewing its position on the Falkland Islands, the British-ruled archipelago in the South Atlantic. Asked about the islands' sovereignty during an Oval Office interaction with reporters, Trump said, "I always review every position. That's just one of many."

The President did not indicate whether the review would lead to any change in the United States' stance on the matter. Washington has generally avoided taking a definitive side on the sovereignty question since 1982, when the UK and Argentina fought a brief but bloody war over the islands.

Argentina, led by President Javier Milei — a close ally of Trump — has continued to claim sovereignty over the Falklands. The renewed US review comes amid reports that the Pentagon had earlier this year weighed a potential shift in the US position as part of a broader set of options to pressure NATO allies perceived as insufficiently supportive of US military operations during the conflict with Iran.
