Trump Signs 'Morally Binding' AI Document With Tech Leaders

US President Donald Trump said on Tuesday that he had signed an artificial intelligence-related document alongside leading technology executives in Washington.

Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Trump described the document as "morally binding" and compared it to a constitution. "It's almost like a Constitution in a way, and the biggest people in the world signed that and I signed it as president and it really is a form of protection," he said.

The president also said his administration was considering setting up an oversight body for the sector. "We're also thinking about forming a committee of sorts where we put maybe 10 people on that committee ... so the committee can watch over the whole enterprise," he said.

The signing comes as governments worldwide try to keep up with fast-moving advances in artificial intelligence. Major AI companies have themselves warned about the risks the technology poses to humanity and have urged governments to cooperate in managing it.

Trump has previously taken the position that the United States does not need new AI-specific regulations. Addressing world leaders at the UN General Assembly last week, he said he "rejects any attempt to construct a globalist scheme to control" AI.
