Trump Tells UN General Assembly 'America Is Back' in Domestic-Focused Address

US President Donald Trump addressed the United Nations General Assembly on Tuesday, opening his remarks with a campaign-style speech that focused largely on his domestic record rather than foreign affairs.

Taking the stage at the annual gathering of world leaders, Trump said he was honoured to welcome the world to America as the country marks 250 years of independence. He declared that the United States is "back" and stronger than ever before, citing the economy, military, technology and energy sectors as areas of national strength.

"Our economy is the envy of the world. Our military is the most powerful on earth. Our technology is second to none, and we are leading in virtually everything," he said.

The president contrasted his administration's record with that of his predecessor, claiming he had inherited a "dark age" and transformed it into a "golden age" for the country. He argued that the wealth, strength and momentum of the United States were lifting the rest of the world.

Trump told delegates that he had acted decisively to reshape the international landscape and address long-standing problems, saying he had no interest in leaving dangers to grow. In a series of contrasts, he said that while others had talked, he had acted; while others spoke of peace, he had made peace; and while others ignored threats, he had confronted them.

Following his address, the White House said Trump was expected to hold talks with new British Prime Minister Andy Burnham and Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, along with a more informal meeting with Venezuela's acting president, Delcy Rodríguez.
