President Donald Trump has said his administration's new oil deal with Venezuela will bring down gasoline prices "fast," but he stopped short of promising immediate relief for American consumers.
Speaking to reporters in the Oval Office on Monday, Trump acknowledged that the impact of the deal might not be felt right away. "Ultimately prices are going to come down," he said. "Now, will it happen before the election? I can't tell you that."
The deal comes at a time when global oil prices are under pressure due to the ongoing conflict involving Iran. Trump had earlier suggested that Americans would see lower prices as a direct result of the agreement.
When pressed on assessments from analysts who believe it could take years for the deal to have any noticeable effect on the pump, the President pushed back, insisting "it'll go fast." He added, "If it was two years, you know, that's a short period of time."
