Turkey, Azerbaijan Target November Deal on Europe Power Link

Turkey, Azerbaijan and other participating countries are aiming to sign an agreement in November to build a power transmission link to Europe, Turkish Energy Minister Alparslan Bayraktar said.

The planned electricity corridor would run from Azerbaijan and Georgia — both rich in wind and hydropower — through Turkey to Europe, allowing surplus electricity to be exported to southeastern Europe. Bayraktar said the participating governments intend to finalise an intergovernmental agreement on the overland corridor during the COP31 climate summit in Antalya in November.

Speaking at the Azerbaijan-Turkey Energy Forum in Baku, Bayraktar described the project as an "electricity TANAP" on a regional scale, referring to the pipeline that carries Caspian gas through Turkey to Europe.

Turkey and Azerbaijan are seeking to use their geographic positions and existing energy ties to become key exporters of green electricity, as European countries diversify their power supplies and pursue decarbonisation targets.

At the same event, Azerbaijani Energy Minister Parviz Shahbazov said his country also plans to build a regional power bridge linking Central Asia to Turkey via the Zangezur transport corridor.
