Turkey, US to Study Small Modular and Gen-IV Reactors Under $2 Million Project

Turkey and the United States will carry out a technical study of American small modular reactor (SMR) and fourth-generation nuclear technologies, under a project funded by the US Trade and Development Agency (USTDA) in partnership with Turkey's state-owned Turkiye Nuclear Energy (TUNAS), the Turkish Energy Ministry said.

The two sides agreed to the project on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York.

The study will evaluate SMR designs from four US companies along with five fourth-generation reactor technologies, examining their potential deployment in Turkey. It will cover technical, economic, legislative and licensing aspects.

Areas of assessment include reactor design features, costs, licensing status, supply chains, a SWOT analysis, potential financing sources and models, permitting requirements, emergency planning, safety considerations, site selection, and the legal and regulatory framework.

The work is expected to run for at least one year and produce technical reports. USTDA will fund the effort under an agreement worth about $2 million.
