Turner's 'Rome, from Mount Aventine' heads to Sotheby's with £50m estimate

"Rome, from Mount Aventine", painted in 1836, was presented to journalists in Rome on Tuesday, September 29, 2026, during a press preview at Palazzo Rondinini. The painting formed the centrepiece of the event, displayed behind Julian Gascoigne, senior specialist in British paintings at Sotheby's London, as he talked the assembled press through the work.
The auction is scheduled to take place in London on December 9.
The estimate places the painting among the more valuable Turner works to come to market in recent years, reflecting the artist's standing as one of the central figures of British landscape painting. Painted during a period when Turner was deeply engaged with Italian subjects, the work depicts the city of Rome as seen from the Aventine Hill.
