A powerful typhoon struck Japan's Pacific coast on Tuesday, causing landslides that killed two people and left four others missing, according to the public broadcaster NHK. The storm, identified as Typhoon Dujuan, also disrupted electricity supplies to nearly 50,000 households in the region.
In Yokosuka, part of the Kanto region, a woman in her 60s died after mud flowed into her home. The landslides occurred in areas of Kanagawa and Chiba prefectures, the broadcaster reported.
Emergency crews worked to clear debris in Miura, a city in Kanagawa south of Tokyo, where they were searching for a missing person at a house engulfed by a landslide. Nearby, a resident was seen clearing thick mud from a street after the typhoon had moved northeast away from the country.
Tokyo Electric Power Co said in a statement that almost 50,000 households remained without electricity.
The typhoon is the latest in a series of extreme weather events that have struck various parts of the world this year, including unusually intense rainfall, floods and tropical cyclones across East Asia, North America and Europe.
