Typhoon Maysak Death Toll in Guangxi Climbs to 159, 10 Still Missing

Typhoon Maysak's July floods killed at least 159 in Guangxi, China, with 10 missing and over 1.6 million affected.

The death toll from Typhoon Maysak and the resulting floods in China's southwestern Guangxi region has risen to at least 159, with 10 people still unaccounted for, according to state-run media on Friday.

The region experienced what officials described as "historically rare, widespread and persistent heavy rainfall" triggered by the typhoon. The deluge caused severe flooding in cities and led to breaches at several reservoirs.

Local authorities reported that at least 107 of the fatalities were linked directly to dam failures at reservoirs. The two hardest-hit cities in the region saw more than 1.6 million people affected by the typhoon-triggered disasters, with over 320,000 residents relocated or evacuated.

Guangxi is now in a post-disaster recovery and reconstruction phase, officials said. The typhoon was one of three — along with Bavi and Noul — to affect China during July.

Nationwide, natural disasters in July left 318 people dead or missing and caused direct economic losses of 57.15 billion yuan (approximately $8.5 billion), according to data from the emergency management ministry.
