UGC Opens Application Window for Distance and Online Courses for 2027 Session
UGC invites applications from eligible institutions for ODL and online course recognition for the January-February 2027 session and onwards.
The University Grants Commission (UGC) has invited applications from higher education institutions seeking recognition to offer programmes through Open and Distance Learning (ODL) and online modes. The application window, which opened on September 1, 2026, is for courses planned for the academic session beginning January-February 2027 and onwards.
Eligible institutions can submit their applications between September 1 and September 15, 2026, through the UGC Distance Education Bureau (DEB) portal. The commission issued a notice on August 31, 2026, outlining the process and deadlines.
In addition to the online submission, institutions must send the original affidavit and required annexures in hard copy. These documents should reach the Joint Secretary, Distance Education Bureau, UGC, at its New Delhi office by September 25, 2026.
The UGC has clarified that submitting an application does not guarantee recognition. Each application will be scrutinised to ensure the institution meets the requirements under UGC rules for online and distance education programmes.
For institutions eligible to offer online programmes and for Category-I institutions eligible for ODL programmes, the application window remains open throughout the year. However, those planning to introduce or continue programmes for the January-February 2027 session must complete the process within the specified deadlines.
The commission has advised institutions to check the DEB website for details on application fees and other updates related to the recognition process.
